Solar Sector Soaring

While the rest of the economy struggled with job loss and slow growth, the solar energy sector made enormous gains and is set to continue this growth.

Twenty years ago, I remember hearing that one day every home would have a computer inside it. I predict now that one day every home will use solar power.

It is inevitable. Do you know that only politics has held the solar energy industry back? This year we have seen this change as support for solar energy appears to be across the board and backed by both Democrats and Republicans.

This wasn t always so. Few people know that 28 years ago, when Jimmy Carter was in office, he tried to bring solar energy to the forefront of this country, but instead he was mocked and his ideas shunned. If some of the concepts he had talked about were implemented, we would be at the forefront of the world s solar industry right now.

Unfortunately, politics shot down many of his ideas that we are only now realizing were genius.

Politics has done nothing to stop the growth of the solar industry in 2010. With falling home sales and high unemployment spread throughout the country, it is so encouraging to have a continuously growing industry. As mentioned, the year 2010 saw tremendous growth and a plethora of plans for new solar projects across the country from solar powered racetracks to solar towers reaching into the sky.

While these projects fill the boards, it coincides with leaps in solar technology along with decreased prices and increased rebates and funding from the government sector. While the number of commercial projects has skyrocketed, the industry has seen unprecedented growth in residential projects. More and more people are exploring the options of solar panels, solar water heaters and even more homes tied into local electrical grids.

The beauty of tying into the grid is that some people find that they are using less energy than they are contributing to the grid.

In some instances, this means the electric company actually cuts them a check each month, paying for the energy they contribute to the grid.

Another exciting development is the increase in jobs in the solar industry. We are seeing more solar installers and other employees hired to help this growing industry succeed.

A new term has even been coined Green Collar Jobs. As more and more people jump on board the solar bandwagon, there is the coinciding increase in public support for improvements in solar technology. What is happening is that solar energy is becoming a bipartisan issue. Several rebates were re-instated when it became apparent just how popular solar projects have become.

As solar power becomes more commonplace, the prices for installing solar panels and other solar projects, such as water heaters, will become even more affordable for homeowners. As this happens, the popularity of solar energy use in residents will grow. Right now, there is an economic incentive to install solar, but some people are impatient and want to see the cost savings earlier.

This will happen before you know it. In addition, one day, every home will benefit from solar power.
